Personalkollen is a Swedish SaaS company, founded in 2011, that offers a modern, cloud-based system for scheduling, time reporting, and payroll – all in one. Their application is designed to simplify everyday administration for managers and employees, with a strong focus on user-friendliness and compliance with Swedish labor laws and collective agreements.
Operating in the HR and workforce management software industry, Personalkollen is used by thousands of businesses across Sweden, helping companies in sectors such as hospitality, retail, and healthcare save time, reduce errors, and stay compliant.
As platform usage grew, so did the demands on their infrastructure – along with the internal effort required to maintain it. At the same time, rising geopolitical tensions and increasing customer expectations made EU data jurisdiction a top priority. Combined with strict requirements for data privacy and operational reliability, Personalkollen recognized the need to host their platform entirely within Sweden. That’s when they turned to Elastisys.
Challenge
Before switching to Elastisys, Personalkollen ran their platform on a self-managed Kubernetes setup using kops on AWS. While AWS offered useful services like RDS for PostgreSQL, the team still had to maintain the Kubernetes cluster themselves, including updates, monitoring, and backups.
They explored alternatives, including running PostgreSQL with high availability using open source tooling, but these still required significant internal resources. At the same time, growing customer demand for full EU data jurisdiction made it increasingly important to move away from a US-based infrastructure and host their platform entirely in Sweden.
What they needed was a fully managed, production-ready application platform hosted in Sweden. In their words: they wanted to spend less time operating Kubernetes and PostgreSQL – and more time developing features their customers actually use.

Solution
With Welkin, the Kubernetes-based application platform from Elastisys, Personalkollen found the right balance: a fully managed solution operated by Elastisys and hosted on Swedish infrastructure. In addition to Managed Kubernetes and Managed PostgreSQL, Welkin includes familiar operational tooling, like Grafana and OpenSearch (a fork of Elasticsearch), which fit their existing tech stack with minimal change, but none of the maintenance overhead.
Since the team was already experienced with Kubernetes, onboarding was straightforward. And with Elastisys handling infrastructure operations, the Personalkollen team could spend less time maintaining platforms – and more time building features for their users.
Result
After switching to Welkin, Personalkollen now spends less time and effort managing their infrastructure and feels more confident about where their data is stored and how well it’s protected.
They now run on ISO 27001-certified infrastructure, fully hosted in Sweden, and no longer face the operational burden of managing their own Kubernetes and PostgreSQL environments.
